DESCRIPTION: Plants monoecious in northern Europe, while mostly dioecious in southeastern Europe; large taproot; calyx as long as corolla; corolla white; stigmas glabrous; ripe fruits are black berries.

DISTRIBUTION: Europe, reaching the northernmost limit of the family in Scandinavia, over to central Asia.
